The Voucher for Superfast Broadband (SFBB) services is an intervention of the “National Broadband Next Generation Access Plan 2014-2020” designed by the General Secretariat for Telecommunications and Post of the Ministry of Digital Policy Telecommunications and Media.
Objective of the project
The project aims at the stimulation demand for access to broadband services on ultra-high speed of at least 100 Mbps readily upgradable to 1 Gbps. This will be achievable with the subsidized “Superfast Broadband Voucher” that contributes to bridge the longstanding country’s digital divide and improve its digital performance in EU “Digital Economy and Society Index” (DESI) related to connectivity as well as familiarizing citizens with next generation broadband networks.
The Superfast Broadband project is included in a set of projects of the Ministry of Digital Policy, Telecommunications and Media that will significantly contribute to the country’s convergence and harmonization with the Digital Agenda for Europe -DAE 2020 as well as the European Commissions’ objectives for 2025 in the context of the policy on “Connectivity for a European Gigabit Society”, which sets ambitious connectivity goals and 5G network development.
The project is aiming at a critical mass of end-users contributing to the adaptation and expansion of new generation broadband services in Greece, and also boosting the current low national ranking compared to EU countries for the use of superfast broadband connectivity networks by the households (0.01% of households).
During the current year it is estimated that the SFBB project will provide high speed Internet access to approximately 150,000 citizens, (both residential and business users).
Currently, the provision of SFBB services over broadband networks is available to a number of Regions of the country, such as Attica, Piraeus, Larissa, Thessaloniki and Laconia.
